Sync your Google calendars, contacts and tasks on your mobile

If, like me, you operate a number of mobile devices including phone, PDA, netbook, and laptop you too might have struggled to keep your calendar appointments synchronised between them. It isn’t always possible to just fire up Google Calendar, especially as I have no data tariff on my Nokia N95, so I often rely on the built-in calendar. Fortunately, using Google Calendar, GooSync has an answer.

The Free Service from GooSync can synchronise your default Google Calendar with a mobile device with a window of between 7 days prior and 30 days after the date of synchronisation. The Premium version extends this functionality and adds additional features including multiple calendars, tasks and contacts and the ability to synchronise up to 4 mobile devices.

“With GooSync, Toffa International’s goal is to provide everyone with something that is free and simple to use, and we’ve also set up a premium option that delivers access to many more features,” says Chris Jukes, CEO of Toffa and GooSync.

According to the company, GooSync works on any device that is SyncML compliant, including the most recent Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola phones. It is also compatible with Windows Pocket PC, Windows SmartPhone, Palm OS, Treo, BlackBerry and Apple iPhone by installing a SyncML client. The range of supported devices can be found at http://www.goosync.com/SupportedDevices.aspx.

I signed up for the Free service and it was a pretty painless process. Set up an account, authorise communication with your Google Calendar account, send an over the air configuration to my Nokia N95 8GB (other phones may require different steps), and enter the PIN code when required. I had to locate the Sync option in my phone (Tools->Sync) and kick off a manual sync (although I understand there is a third party Auto-sync tool available for Symbian devices). Once this was done everything just worked  – just the way I like it. You can view your Sync log on line which helps understand what is going on.
