Tip: How to search for an App in the Windows 8 Store

Until we all get used to Windows 8, and its charms, many of us are likely to find certain things in the new Windows 8 somewhat unintuitive. They aren’t of course – we’re just used to doing things differently.

Windows 8 Charm Search BarOne example might be when trying to search for a new, or interesting (or both!), App on the Windows 8 store – but where is the search box?

The green shopping bag Store Live Tile should be sitting on the Start Page and a quick tap brings up the Windows Store where you should see guided categories for “Spotlight”, “Games”, “Social”, “Entertainment”, and so on but what if we already know the kind of app we are looking for and want to search for it?

There are two answers: the first answer is the “Charm” bar and we better get used to it. On a computer with a keyboard the charm bar can be selected by pressing the Windows key and Q and for those without you need to swipe your finger from the far right, towards the left, which will show a search icon – tap this and you should get to the same place. From the Search bar (ensure you don’t click on “Apps”) start searching and any Apps that are not currently installed will appear under the search box in a section entitled “Recommendations”. Important! The Search bar appears to be context aware so ensure you run the search from within the Store App itself otherwise it will limit searches to locally installed apps.

Windows 8 Search Results BarThe second answer is to simply start typing in the Store App. For example, start typing Dictionary, and the charm bar will pop up with recommendations. Ok, it’s not very intuitive but it works.
