Atlassian Simplifies Product Range (Naming)
Simplify – that’s the message from Atlassian regarding upcoming changes to it’s product naming system.
Atlassian is building up quite a portfolio of applications and supporting tools including JIRA, Confluence, GreenHopper, Team Calendars, Bonfire, and Bitbucket which when combined provide quite a formidable platform upon which to manage projects and develop software applications. However, with such a rich product portfolio new clients, and even some existing clients, may have difficulty identifying just what is a product, what is an add-on, and how various applications and add-ons go together.
In what looks to be the start of a consistency drive the company has announced, via its blog, it is to simplify its product list and “make it easy for customers to distinguish stand-alone products from Atlassian add-ons”.
So, GreenHopper becomes JIRA Agile whilst Bonfire becomes JIRA Capture and Team Calendars becomes Confluence Team Calendars, amongst other changes. Atlassian are keen to point out that “The products you know and love remain the same, only the names are changing”.
Whilst products like GreenHopper and Bonfire have built reputations on their own, using their existing names, the new name change makes a lot of sense when considering the platform as a whole.
