Desktops Still Hanging On To Windows XP Despite Looming Deadline

Microsoft may be ending support for Windows XP early next year but the operating system is still used on a massive number of desktop computers and is still available to buy (OEM and boxed) from online vendors.

Microsoft Windows XPWhen it first appeared, back in 2001, Windows XP was welcomed, particularly following the curiosity that was Windows ME, so much so that when Vista appeared in 2007 many were reluctant to make the jump, and according to research XP still remained dominant until mid-2012. This research is based on computers that regularly access the web so is unlikely to include those desktops sitting tightly behind corporate caching servers or on shop floors with no internet access.

Research from NetMarketShare shows Windows XP is still used on over 37% of desktop computers whilst Windows 7 sits at just over 44% and Vista and Windows 8 share roughly the same margin at around 4.5% each. With Windows 8 building ground Windows 7 now feels like something of a stepping stone and may see many either leapfrog it entirely to Windows 8 (or later) or hang on to Windows XP beyond the support deadline. Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows NT are still in everyday use too according to the figures in the research.

Support for Windows XP stops on April 8, 2014 which means essential security updates will no longer be available for the product.
