Random technology Blog of the Week, 5th Oct 2007: SlipperyBrick.com
A new idea I’m going to try out once per week is to pull out a random technology related Blog and talk about it here. Todays technology Blog is called SlipperyBrick with the slogan “Funny name, Serious technology”.
Slippery Brick describes itself as:
SlipperyBrick was founded in August of 2006 as a division of Pragmatic Labs, and is a web site dedicated to the relentless search for all things technical.
We have an obsessive passion for emerging consumer based technology, gadgets and related sciences and our staff of editors have years of experience, knowledge and most importantly a high interest in these technologies. Our staff strives to bring the most comprehensive, accurate and interesting information possible while leveraging our experiences and knowledge to add valuable insight (and often poorly executed humor) to our readers.
SlipperyBrick may sound like a silly name but we are very serious about technology. Rely on us for your emerging technology news. Be sure to check back often.
The first thing that jumps out is the ad’s. They are on the left, right, top and bottom of the Blog. Ad’s aren’t necessarily a bad thing in my book but when they take the focus off the main site it can be somewhat distracting especially as some of these ads are animated which is an added distraction. However, at least they aren’t in the main central panel which is where the Blog posts are located. I couldn’t find a Blog archive area which made it tricky finding out how old the Blog is.
The most recent posts (15 of them) are all October 4th, only 1 day ago, by a number of different posters which gives the blog a multi-dimensional viewpoint. I also found the Glossary a neat feature however it isn’t hugely populated but it has some interesting descriptions and is a handy place for looking up odd acronyms that presumably turn up on the site.
The Blog looks at interesting gadgets and certainly has some great images. The associated text with each Blog post is relatively short making it easy to take in and I do get the idea that the site is more of a collation of information found from other sites rather than hands on reviews. At least these other sites including Gizmodo, Tech-On!, and Techfresh are all clearly cited. One of the more interesting recent posts (as well as the one about the pillow that purportedly prevents snoring) talks about a concept design for pill like Solar powered capsules of light. The original post is here and the cited Gizmodo story is here.
Overall the site seems well laid out with an easy on the eye colour scheme and short but snappy posts with interesting images. The collation of interesting gadgets makes interesting scrolling though I often found myself just looking at the pictures rather than reading too much of the text – no bad thing though. A picture is worth a thousand words isn’t it? I enjoyed my visit to Slippery Brick and no doubt will be back again to check out the latest gadgets. A quick Google search returned 32,800 links referencing www.slipperybrick.com which should offer a reasonable gauge as to its popularity and it gained a reasonable 4.7 Juice rating from the Blog Juice Calculator.

I thought your article on slippery brick was very interesting – but I am currently having a problem with updating my bios – do you have any thoughts

I agree…this blog (slippery brick) is one of the better ones that I’ve seen.
I did notice that they do have original reviews though, even though their bread & butter appears to be compiling the more interesting technology news stories and gadgets in one place. Since they seem sincere about providing good content, their advertising doesn’t bother me.
